Dr Saleem H. Ali, Associate Professor of Environmental Policy and Planning and Associate Dean for Graduate Education (2007-2008), Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Vermont has released the following information.
Under a grant from the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, his team just finished a project in Fiji which focuses on issues of risk perception, closure and community livelihoods around gold mining. They have attempted to provide a balanced perspective on these sensitive issues in a country with multiple ethnic populations and a confluence of service sector and primary industry economies.
The project involved a detailed risk perception survey of gold mining communities and, an ethnographic study as well as a documentary film (co-directed by film-maker Kristian Maynard).
